I think you should desaturate the background colors slightly so the characters will stand out more. This illustration still gives me the warm-fuzzies, though. The kites are really well done, and I just noticed the one shaped like a wizard.
I agree with Christina on the background part, that would help it so much. This is well done, Dan! Great job! Yay Xander!!
